Research Assistant  (one year, renewable: contingent upon funding)
Location
  University of Tennessee, Knoxville plus field work in National Parks
Effective Date

Job Description

To assist with development and maintenance of research monitoring
systems for nutrient cycling and stream discharge from
terrestrial ecosystems.  To assist in research budget tracking,
and renew research permits.  To assist in  the compilation,
analysis, and presentation of research findings.

Requirements
Minimum of a Bachelors degree in biology, natural resources,
ecology, aquatic chemistry, or a related field.  Prior experience
with scientific research procedures.  Must possess good writing
and oral presentation skills in order to assist with the
compilation and presentation of results.  Must exhibit an
understanding of ecological concepts.

Physical Requirements:
The maintenance of field operations requires the performance of
the following tasks:  hiking distances up to two miles in steep
forested terrain in snow conditions, carrying backpacks and
buckets weighing up to 30 pounds, using hand tools for
construction and installation of field equipment.

Salary
   $18,000 per year

Research Assistant - Forest Ecologist

Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries

The incumbent is responsible to the faculty member who is
principal investigator of cooperative research projects with the
National Park Service.  The incumbent will assist project leader in
conducting a high elevation watershed study in the Great Smoky
Mountains National Park.  The purpose of this work is to assess
impacts of acidic atmospheric deposition to high elevation ecosystems
in the Park by monitoring atmospheric deposition, soil solution and
stream chemistries.  The monitoring provides information about air
quality and sensitivity of high elevation ecosystems.

The incumbent will assist in management of field operations including
maintenance of the research monitoring equipment, and assist with
budget tracking and projection, and the preparation of research
results for presentations and publications.

Assisting Management of Research Monitoring Project:  Responsibilities
will include assisting with the design and implementation of
protocols for field collections and laboratory analyses; installing
and maintaining field equipment including hydrologic flumes, field
computers, and water quality monitors.  (S)he will supervise one
technician in these duties.
Budgeting:  The incumbent will assist with the purchasing of field
equipment and supplies; tracking and projecting the research
budget; and maintaining documentation and research permits for the
project.
Presentation of Findings:  The incumbent will assist with the
preparation and presentation of research findings.
Responsibilities will include the compilation and analysis of data;
assisting the Principal Investigator in interpretation of findings
and the preparation of scientific articles;  preparation of
abstracts and presentation of results at conferences.  The
incumbent maintains professional contacts with research
collaborators.

The incumbent will operate University of Tennessee vehicles used in
travel to the site and collection of samples.  The incumbent will be
stationed at the University of Tennessee's Agricultural Campus at
Knoxville.  However, (s)he will work at or near the field sites,
during periods of instrument installation or intensive sampling.  The
maintenance of field operations requires the performance of the
