---------------------------------------------------------- EUROPEAN FOREST INSTITUTE - EFI EFI is an independent, international research institute conducting research on European forest resources and their health, ecology and use. The Institute launched its activities in January 1993 and the first board meeting was held in the EFI headquarters in Joensuu in February. The board consists of 5 members outside Finland and 4 Finnish members. An association will be founded in order to quide the work of the Institute. Consequently the Institute's independent status as an international research unit will be underlined. EFI has begun its research work by creating a European Forest Data Bank in collaboration with ECE/FAO Agriculture and Timber Division. The first version of the computerized data base with the information of the most significant forest resources and use of wood has been issued in February 1993. On the basis of the Forest Resources Assessment of 1990 forest resources the Institute seeks options for the future of the European forests. The report of the Institute will be the basis for discussion on the subject in the Joint Session of The FAO European Forestry Comission and the ECE Timber Committee in Rome, October 1993 Research programmes on the European forest carbon budget, growth, health and forest policy is under preparation. The Institute also plans to participate in the developing of georeferenced database of European forests and ecology, as well as the development of planning methods of multible use of the forest. These topics have been prepared with the Swiss, Danish and German collaborators of the Institute. In addition, there has been discussions on the co-operation between the Institute and the forest offcials of European Community in Brussels.
