Announcement ! An independet and non-governmental research body, EUROPEAN FOREST INSTITUTE - EFI, has been founded and will commence its activities in Joensuu, Finland. The purpose of the new international research institute is to conduct problem-orientated and multidisciplinary forest research at European level in order to serve the needs of decision-making bodies in Europe. The institute will collaborate closely with international organisation and national research institutions, and will function as a data bank and information centre concerning European Forest. The institute will be governed by an international Board. The staff of EFI will gradually grow to 20 researchers and approximately 10 persons for administrative and service functions. The majority of the researchers will be recruited from outside Finland. The duration of appointments will vary a few weeks to three years. All interested individuals and organisations are welcome to participate in formulation of the research programme as well as the scope of function of the Institute.
