Seedling quality symposium 6-7. Oct 1993



FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS

ORGANISERS

The conference has been organised under the joint auspices of the
South African Forestry Institute and the South African National
Forestry Forum.  IUFRO recognition requested. 

AIMS OF THE CONFERENCE

To examine the concept of plant quality and how this is affected by
seedling morphology and physiology; how nursery practice can affect
these parameters, and to determine the effect of plant quality on
survival and growth after field planting.  

DATE AND VENUE

October 6th and 7th, 1993, Pietermaritzburg, Natal, South Africa.

PRE-CONFERENCE TOUR

A pre-conference tour, to introduce overseas visitors to South African
plantation forestry and the associated nursery systems, will be held
from September 25th to October 5th, 1993.  The cost of the 10 day tour
will be R2000 (US $666), payable in advance. Those wishing to
participate in the pre-conference tour will meet at Johannesburg's Jan
Smuts airport at 12h00 on Sunday, September 25th 1993.  All transport,
accommodation and meals are included in the cost of the pre-conference
tour. 

INVITED SPEAKERS

Dr Tom Landis, Dr Jim Barnett and Dr Don Marx of the USDA Forest
Service from Corvallis, Pineville and Athens respectively; Dr N
Malajczuk of the CSIRO, Perth, Australia; Dr John Mexal of the
University of New Mexico, Dr. David Rook of the British Forestry 

CALL FOR PAPERS

Contributions in the form of 20-minute verbal presentations and/or
poster papers on the conference theme will be most welcome.  One page
abstracts should reach the conference organisers by 31st March 1993 to
enable the final programme to be drawn up.  

REGISTRATION FEES

The registration fee for the conference is R400 (US $133) per person which 
includes the proceedings, lunches, tea/coffee for the two days and a 
conference dinner.

TRANSPORT AND ACCOMMODATION

Participants should make their own transport arrangements.  For those
attending the conference, Durban is the nearest airport.  Those going
on the tour should use Johannesburg.  Hotel accommodation is available
in Pietermaritzburg but should be booked well in advance.
