"Seedling forests" to study growth and yield relationships

I have been experimenting with "seedling forests" to study growth
yield relationships as they pertain to older stands. For example, I
planted scots pine seeds at 3 different spacings in the greenhouse, and
recorded the collar diameter growth of the seedlings over time. The
affect of the spacings was expressed nicely in the diameter data. I
eventually thinned in each spacing, and could see the response in the
diameter data. I'm approaching this as a possible way to "model" what
goes on in older stands, and/or as a way to verify mathematical models
   of growth and yield.
Are there any similar experiences out there? Are you aware of similar
   studies?
                                       Thanks,
