******* PLEASE POST AND/OR CALL TO THE ATTENTION OF ******* APPROPRIATE INDIVIDUALS ******* DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT: 24 SEPTEMBER, 1992 RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP IN FOREST TREE ECOPHYSIOLOGY One 50%-time position is available for a qualified degree candidate to conduct research on the physiological mechanisms of interaction between sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) and loblolly pine (Pinus taeda). The position is funded for 20 months, with an additional 4-6 months potentially available; it is most-suited to a Master of Science degree program. In many commercial pine plantations, sweetgum is considered an undesirable competitor with loblolly pine. The project is funded to investigate the potential role of below-ground (root) dynamics in effecting the negative interaction between sweetgum and loblolly pine. The research site has been located and part of the experimental plots have been established. The successful applicant will have the option of conducting the research as it has been designed, or developing a new direction on the same topic. QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor's degree in forestry or botany and course work or experience in one or more of the following: plant physiology, plant ecology, and soil science.
