******* PLEASE POST AND/OR CALL TO THE ATTENTION OF
******* APPROPRIATE INDIVIDUALS
******* DATE OF THIS ANNOUNCEMENT: 24 SEPTEMBER, 1992

RESEARCH ASSISTANTSHIP IN FOREST TREE ECOPHYSIOLOGY

One 50%-time position is available for a qualified degree candidate
to conduct research on the physiological mechanisms of interaction
between sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) and loblolly pine (Pinus
taeda). The position is funded for 20 months, with an additional
4-6 months potentially available; it is most-suited to a Master of
Science degree program. In many commercial pine plantations,
sweetgum is considered an undesirable competitor with loblolly
pine. The project is funded to investigate the potential role of
below-ground (root) dynamics in effecting the negative interaction
between sweetgum and loblolly pine. The research site has been
located and part of the experimental plots have been established.
The successful applicant will have the option of conducting the
research as it has been designed, or developing a new direction on
the same topic.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor's degree in forestry or botany and course work or
experience in one or more of the following: plant physiology, plant
ecology, and soil science.

SALARY: $12,000 annually, tuition is waived
