Plant Growth Modeler
Position: The Center for Water and the Environment of the Natural
Resources Research Institute - University of Minnesota, Duluth in
cooperation with the USDA Forest Service, North Central Forest
Experiment Station, seeks a plant growth modeler to work as a
Post-Doctoral Associate. The initial appointment will be full-time for
1 year. Based on the availability of external funds, the position may
be funded in subsequent years.
Duties: The applicant will be asked to plan, design, and implement a
3-dimensional soil - root process submodel that is linked to ECOPHYS, a
whole-tree growth process model. The applicant will review the
existing soil-root process models and study their applicability for use
with ECOPHYS. The processes that will need to be modeled include:
root architecture and growth in 3-dimensional soil space, carbon
allocation patterns, soil nutrient flow and uptake into the root
system, water uptake, and soil moisture and temperature dynamics. The
goal of the project will be to model the impacts of carbon dioxide,
ozone, and climate change on tree growth. Qualifications: The
successful candidate must have a PhD in one of the Plant Sciences.
Selection Criteria: Educational background in whole plant physiology,
experience in plant growth modelling, and experience in programming
with one of the following languages: C, C++, BASIC, PASCAL, FORTRAN, or
PROLOG. Educational or experimental exposure to root-soil systems and
processes is desirable. Incumbent will work with an interdisciplinary
team of researchers in developing the root - soil submodel for ECOPHYS.
Salary: $2,083 per month minimum.
