THE SEVENTH WORKSHOP ON ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND RELATED TOPICS TRAINING SESSION MON. NOV. 2 AND TUES. NOV. 3 SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE WED. NOV. 4 AND THURS. NOV. 5 1992 VIRGINIA POLYTECHNIC INSTITUTE & STATE UNIVERSITY BLACKSBURG VA SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE As in past years, we will devote two days to informal presentation and discussion of topics in AI. This session will be held in the Brush Mountain Room of the Squires Student Center on the Virginia Tech campus. Presentation topics will cover systems currently in use, systems under development, proposed systems, a category of systems best known as "vaporware", and other topics of relevance to artificial intelligence, models of thinking, and advances in computing machinery. The emphasis is on free exchange of thought. No proceedings will be issued, but a section of the journal AI Applications will be available to those wishing to publish. The Workshop will be reported on in the same journal. Papers are due at the meeting for those wishing prompt publication. The journal's regular refereeing policy will be applied. If you plan to present a discussion or paper, you should notify Dan Schmoldt at Virginia Tech as soon as possible. You do not need to prepare a formal paper in order to make a presentation. However, we would like a title and a brief paragraph describing your presentation topic so that we may group them into the appropriate categories. The design of the meeting leans toward informality, and your time, usually on the order of 30 minutes, is all yours, to be used or misused as you see fit. If you plan a presentation longer than 30 minutes, please discuss this with Dan as soon as possible. Computer facilities for display of programs will be available, as will overhead and slide projectors. If needed, a standard VHS video player can be provided. REGISTRATION AND TRAVEL Because we are holding the meeting at a non-Forest Service facility, we are charging a $50 registration fee for the Scientific Conference. (If you attend both the training session and the scientific conference, the fee is $200. See below.) The fees are to be paid to IUFRO S4.11. Since all fees are being handled through the IUFRO account, we are asking that you write a personal check to IUFRO S4.11 and send it along with your registration. There is no special registration form; just send a brief letter/e-mail/FAX indicating your intention to attend and notification of your presentation topic (see above), if presenting. Any government employees may then claim the check as part of their Travel Voucher claim. Registration for the Workshop should be sent to: Daniel L. Schmoldt Brooks Forest Products Center Virginia Tech University Blacksburg VA 24061-0503 (703) 231-4674 D.Schmoldt:R08F14D01A schmoldt@vtcc1.cc.vt.edu Dan would appreciate receiving your registration as early as possible so that he knows how many people plan to attend. All registrants are responsible for their travel and lodging arrangements. Everyone that registers in advance will receive a mailing about local accommodations (government rates in Blacksburg are $57/$26). Blacksburg is about 45 minutes from the Roanoke Regional Airport which is served by several affiliates of the major air carriers. From Roanoke, attendees may rent a car and drive to Blacksburg or, if there is sufficient interest, we can make arrangements to have vans available to transport people. In order to shuttle people by vans we will need advance information about arrival times from those attending. Those desiring this service should indicate so and provide arrival information when they register. We are making arrangements for special social activities to encourage even more informal interaction in a non-workshop environment. TRAINING SESSION The training session will be held on the two days prior to the scientific conference. It is primarily intended for Forest Service personnel, but we encourage attendance by individuals from other government agencies and from universities. This session will be held in the School of Forestry and Wildlife Resources' computer laboratory located in Cheatham Hall on the Virginia Tech campus. It is a state-of-the-art computer lab with 25 interconnected PC's. The curriculum consists of several presentations on expert system concepts and design, but is mostly a "hands-on" exercise in which each student or a group of students is led through creation of an expert system of their subject-matter choice. (Note that a a group of students working on the same project may share a single machine). Each student's tuition includes purchase of a preliminary version of the PC-based Penn Shell development environment software and manual. Along with this fee is a substantial discount toward the purchase of a final version of the Penn Shell. The fee for the training session is $200, and will include attendance at the scientific conference to meet practitioners and talk with them. Additional details about the training session can be obtained from: Michael Foster 501 ASI Penn State University University Park PA 16802 (814) 865-3375 FAX 3048 mfoster@psupen.psu.edu
