Revised announcement of the list

/To be printed in IUFRO News upon request of H.Schmutzenhofer/

Dear Forest Scientist: Announcement#4

F o r e s t m a i l i n g l i s t i s n o w i n o p e r a t i o n

We are glad to announce that an international electronic mailing list
has been set up for forest researchers. The mailing list is intended
to be a general-purpose forum for all issues that can be fitted into
email and are raised within IUFRO members and other parties interested
in forestry sciences.

The mailing list works in internet and all other nets that have
gateways to it. These include bitnet and X400 mail to U.S. Forest
Service.

U s a g e

The mailing list works simply: all messages that are sent to:
	forest@nic.funet.fi
are forwarded to all the members who have subscribed to the forest-list.

A d m i n i s t r a t i o n

You can join the list by sending a subsription to:
	mailserver@nic.funet.fi
The subscription should contain only four words on one line:
	subscribe forest <your first name> <your last name>

The mailserver interpretes your mailing address from the mail you
send. Correspondingly, you may unsubcribe from the list with the
following message:
	unsubscribe forest

You can get information about the services by sending the following one
line, one word message to the mailserver:
	help

For instance, one useful command that is apparent from help is:
	review forest
which returns you a list of the subsrcibers.

Physically, the mailing list resides at the State Computing Centre,
Espoo, Finland. The same computer nic.funet.fi hosts one of Europe's
largest software archives accessible with ftp. We are connecting the
list to some usenet groups, but his will not be available globally for
now.

If you want to reach the administrator of the list, please send email
to:
	forest-request@nic.forest.fi
Please do not send administrative material to the list and all its
members. The mailserver is still somewhat experimental, but we try to
solve possible problems quickly.

The adminstrator is:
	Mr. Ari Turkia
	Forestry Faculty
	University of Joensuu
	P.O.Box 111
	SF-80101 Joensuu, Finland
	turkia@lists.funet.fi

You may also correspond with Don Latham and the undersigned about
IUFRO computers issues.

S u b s c r i b e t o d a y

If there is demand for specialized groups, we can set up additional
lists for the various forestry subfields. However, we feel that this
needs to be done only after sufficient activity around some topic has
been demonstrated in the main list. Please use the subject field of
email wisely to indicate what topic you are discussing.

What is suitable material to the list? Almost anything that is not
personal and has at least some general interest amoung forest
scientists. Announcements of events and positions are maybe the most
interesting ones. If you have questions that you do not know whom to
ask, go ahead on the list. These questions include such as "what is a
recommeneded book to learn of something?", "is anybody using software
package A to solve a particular problem?", and so on.

We hope that this mailing list will see lots of activity. Please
spread the word among your colleagues.

Yours,
			Hannu Saarenmaa
