During 2005, 220 referenced scientific articles written by Metla researchers were published in international journals. The number of publications has steadily grown during the past five years. Metla’s own publications are available in electronic form at www.metla.fi/julkaisut/index.htm

Silva Fennica is the most frequently cited general journal of forestry

According to the 2004 Reference Index released by the Institute of Scientific Information (ISI) Silva Fennica is the most frequently cited (using proportional citation index) general journal of forestry in the world. If publications specializing in narrower sections of forestry are included, Silva Fennica is rated with the sixth highest “impact factor” index in the world.

A reference index is a proportional value expressing how many times Silva Fennica’s articles have been used as a source in studies published in other scientific journals during the past two years. ISI is a company founded in 1958 in the USA and it collects and publishes bibliographic data on scientific literature. ISI’s databases of scientific peer-review literature are the most frequently used sources in academic research.

The success of Silva Fennica is the result of determined development work. The publishers, the Finnish Society of Forest Science and the Finnish Forest Research Institute set themselves the objective of turning the publication into a scientific journal with international prestige. This has been successfully done, which is evidenced by the fact that more than half of the manuscripts submitted to Silva Fennica are received from significant forestry countries outside Finland. Of all submitted manuscripts during the last three years four out of ten, on average, have been approved for publication.

Silva Fennica is freely available for reading on the Internet at www.metla.fi/silvafennica/. The journal is also available as a traditional hardcopy subject to a charge.

In 2005 approximately 160 newsletters were published on Metla’s website. One third of the newsletters were on research, one third on forestry statistics and the rest were forestry forecasts or organizational news. Approximately 60 newsletters were published on the English pages of Metla’s website. Of these, 80 percent concerned research and the rest were organizational news. Compared with 2004, the number of newsletters in English became ten-fold. The number of research newsletters was tripled compared with 2004.

An external service was used for monitoring the acceptance rate of Metla’s media releases and news in the media. In 2005 Metla was in the news almost 2500 times in the press, or on radio or television. Some 2000 of the hits were printed in newspapers or magazines. All media releases submitted by Metla made their way into the news in one form or another.

The Dissertationes Forestales website, electronic annals of forest science, was opened in June by the Finnish Society of Forest Science, University of Helsinki, University of Joensuu and the Finnish Forest Research Institute. The doctoral theses can be retrieved at www.metla.fi/dissertationes. The main thesis archive is maintained in the data system of Metla, but the websites of the universities also contain links to them.

In August the Finnish Forest Research Institute became an information provider for the Global Forest Information Service (GFIS). The service is organized as a global and collected website to allow various forest research organizations to disseminate their news, information on their events and job openings on the GFIS website using automatic input data. GFIS operates in conjunction of the Collaborative Partnership on Forests (CPF) and it is coordinated by the International Union of Forest Research Organisations (IUFRO). The service is free of charge and it has links to forest-related websites and databases, so it constitutes an easy and effective way for the user to search for global forest knowledge and provides networking possibilities between forestry professionals.
