Annosus root rot is prevented during cutting operations in the summer by applying Rotstop® preparation at the cutting surfaces. Rotstop contains live spores of Heterobasidion annosum fungus. The preparation has been used in Finland since 1992, but its efficacy needed to be re-established through research. On the eight cutting area test sites the Rotstop preparation proved still effective: it reduced root infection by H. annosum spores by approximately 92 percent. No significant difference was observed between mechanical and manual treatments. The second objective of the study was to find new and more effective species of H. annosum. For this purpose, 50 new strains were collected to study their growth rate and spore production capacity in vitro.
