There are many things that could still be improved in the methods of artificial forest regeneration and seedling stand management. Metla has studied machine-based planting using Bracke and Ecoplanter planting machines. The quality of Bracke, which operates on the mounding principle, was the same as that of manual planting. Also the planting costs with Bracke were competitive compared with manual planting, especially at sites where logging residues had been removed. Ecoplanter uses the milling principle and as a consequence, there was a problem caused by seedling damage due to pine weevil.

A separate study was made on the effects of logging residue and stump removal on land cultivation and planting. It turned out that logging residue removal improves the productivity and/or quality of the work when mechanized mounding and planting methods are used. In addition, after logging residue and/or stump removal the mechanized planting and cultivating methods based on continuous mounding may be useful and cost-effective.
