Profitability of private forestry in northern Ostrobothnia varies more than predicted |
|||||
|
Large variation was observed in productivity of private forestry in northern Ostrobothnia depending on variables such as site type and tree species. Considerable deviations were also found in forest regeneration profitability also in different parts of the province, when forest earnings are measured by the internal rate of interest. This leads to the fact that forest specialists must be able to recognize the various growth conditions and characteristics of growth factors in the different parts of northern Ostrobothnia. The second significant result from the EMTOR development programme on European support and control of agricultural funds was the fact that forest management practices should be timed especially at the seedling or pole stage. If early treatment and later pre-commercial thinnings were left undone, it would mean average losses of stumpage earnings between 500-700 euros per hectare. The third main result was that without exception, active forest management is the best way of private forest management. A well-managed stand is always a more profitable alternative than a stand left without management. Additional information: http://www.metla.fi/hanke/7718/index-en.htm |
