Operational provisions for regional entrepreneurship in timber procurement need to be improved

 >

Finnish timber procurement organizations are granting more responsibility to harvesting and logistics entrepreneurs who take on these tasks within a specified geographical area. Metla conducted an interview study among entrepreneurs who work for the Metsäliitto Group as subcontractors on their preparedness for regional entrepreneurship in timber procurement.

The biggest companies, those owning at least four machines or trucks, were all interested in regional entrepreneurship. Small companies were more uncertain and suspicious about working under another company, especially companies that had no previous experience of working as a subcontractor. The factors causing uncertainty include the quality of stands marked for cutting and economic profitability of the company.

The present regional entrepreneurs considered regional operation promising and a good model for forestry development, but the operational provisions should be improved to gain advantage of the system through, for instance, better planning. Along with improved operational conditions regional entrepreneurship was considered as a motivating way to organize timber procurement.
