Ecological values as part of forest management planning |
|||||
|
An essential issue in practical forestry and forest management planning today is taking ecological values into consideration. This study, funded by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, examined how spatial analysis methods can be applied to produce ecological knowledge and to improve it to meet the needs of forest planning. During the project habitat suitability evaluations and trial plans were created for, for example, the flying squirrel, capercaillie and Siberian jay. These species with their requirements for habitat may indicate success of other species with more specific environmental requirements. The essential message of the programme’s ecological studies for forest planning and management is that when making environmental assessments for new species it is important to consider both the forest indicators of individual forests and structural indicators of wider areas. The final project report also describes studies in which methods were developed for the METSO Forest Biodiversity Programme for Southern Finland to facilitate the selection of objects for nature values trading in private forests.
