Development of peatland harvesting

Kuva: (C) Metla/Erkki Oksanen

Small harvesters are competitive in peatland forests

The aim of the project was to increase knowledge about peatland harvesting alternatives. Small one-grip harvester - forwarder harvesting chains turned out to be cost-competitive when compared with the widely used medium-sized harvester -forwarder harvesting chain. According to the cost calculations performed, using small one-grip harvesters with a cutting strip method with longer forwarding strip distance is a cost-effective method for first thinnings of pine stands of varying tree quality, when both harvesting costs and the costs of the consequences of harvesting were taken into consideration.
