Models, planning and decision support in accomodating different forms of forest use

Kuva: (C) Metla/Erkki Oksanen

The project was set up to study how different models, techniques and methods and calculations produced through them can effectively be utilised in the different phases of the planning process. Studies indicated, for example, how voting worked as a method of participatory planning, how the priority order of forest management and use can be used to select the best plan, how GIS analyses can be utilised to produce forest planning (e.g. ecological) information, and how forest planning calculations can support landowners' and authorities' decision-making regarding voluntary protection of diversity.

The Metinfo forest information services website contains several information services on various topics at one address: www.metla.fi/metinfo/index-en.htm. A new "Sustainable forestry" service was opened in May 2004. The website contains up-to-date information about the changing metrics that describe the sustainability of forestry in Finland. The metrics give a versatile picture about sustainable forestry from the ecological, economic, social and cultural point of view.
