The proportion of peer-reviewed articles of all publications was 35%, which corresponds to the long-range average. It also contains the seven doctoral dissertations. During 2004, 190 articles written by Metla’s researchers were published in foreign scientific journals.
Metla and the Finnish Society of Forestry Science print a scientific journal in English, Silva Fennica, and a Finnish scientific magazine called Metsätieteen aikakauskirja. Both of these are available as printed hardcopies and electronic versions via the Internet. Silva Fennica has been developed into an internationally competitive scientific journal and has consolidated its status as a distinguished international publication. The ISI Impact Factor for Silva Fennica was rated well with a rising trend. According to the latest 2003 Impact Factor Silva Fennica was rated among the six most frequently referred journals in the field of forest science. The comparison included all international publications within forest sciences. A distinguished international science journal reinforces the international significance of the forest research work being carried out and, through scientific evaluation and dissemination of information, is a communication channel to and from the academic communities of other countries.
Four issues of Silva Fennica were published, containing 34 research articles and reviews, reports and commentaries. One research article was published in the new Silva Fennica Monographs series. In the Finnish Forest Research Institute Research Papers 28 issues were published in 2004. Metsätilastollinen vuosikirja (Statistical Yearbook of Forestry) and Metsäsektorin suhdannekatsaus (Finnish Forest Sector Economic Outlook) appeared in the autumn, as usual. Four issues of Metsäntutkimus (Forest Research) – Metla’s paper for customers were published in Finnish.
The first issue of a new journal called Working Papers of the Finnish Forest Research Institute was published in spring 2004. This publication is freely available via the Internet and can be retrieved and printed at www.metla.fi/julkaisut/workingpapers/index-en.htm.
The Working papers series consists of preliminary results of research projects, survey reports, presentations and proceedings from meetings. The series is not subject to peer review. The publications are either in Finnish or English. The Working paper series is meant to serve as a publication channel for Metla’s research projects and meeting material.
A series of forest scientific doctoral dissertations (Dissertationes Forestales) was initiated at the end of the year as a result of cooperation between Metla, the Faculty of Agriculture and Forestry at the University of Helsinki and the Faculty of Forestry at the University of Joensuu.
More than 100 fact-sheets reporting Metla studies were published on the Metla website in 2004. Almost half of them were on forest statistics, one quarter were research results and the rest were, e.g. forecasts and organizational announcements.
The average visiting time on Metla’s website in 2004 was more than five minutes. One loaded page contains the files, illustrations and icons. The number of hits increased, though the number of visits decreased. Hits at less than about 30 minute intervals from the same address are considered as part of one visit.
