Databanks, computations and models in the forest environment

 >

Metla produces and administrates information resources relating to forestry and the status of the forest ecosystem. Metla has carried out the National Forest Inventory (NFI) calculation since 1921. During the inventory process wide-ranging data is collected on the amount and growth of tree stands, conditions of forests and biological diversity. Up-to-date information on sufficiency of timber reserves, forest growth and carbon reservoirs is needed to address items such as forest management, planning of the use of forest resources, monitoring of sustainable forestry, and international forest policy.

Metla creates national estimates on cutting potential and makes regional forest calculations based on the NFI materials as ordered by customers. The MELA software, created by Metla specifically for such calculations, is a commonly used planning tool in forestry. Metla also prepares most of the official forest statistics in Finland and participates in pan-European monitoring of the forest health status. The monitoring is performed annually on 6000 observation plots located in different parts of Europe. The Metinfo forest information services on the Metla website provide up-to-date information on forests, forest conditions and reserves, and seedling production.
