The Council of State appointed Hannu Raitio, Ph.D., as the Director General of the Finnish Forest Research Institute, effective May 1, 2004.

Hannu Raitio has worked as a researcher at the Parkano Research Station of Metla since 1976, and he was appointed as the Director of the Parkano Research Station in 1996. Dr. Raitio has worked in a determined manner to enhance the development of the strategy and staff management of the Parkano Research Station. He defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Oulu in 1990.Raitio has developed systems for monitoring forest health conditions and studied, among other topics, the nutritive regime of tree stands and the effect of air pollutants on the growth of stands. Dr. Raitio has extensive experience on international and national research collaboration and scientific administration.

 

Hannu Ilvesniemi, D.Sc. (For.), was appointed as the Professor of Soil Science at the Vantaa Research Centre, effective January 1, 2004.

The field of soil science includes studies about soil properties and the processes that control them, and soil as part of the forest ecosystem. Additionally, the research field covers the environmental effects of forestry, classification of forest sites, issues related to forest regeneration, as well as soil fertility and nutrient retention. Hannu Ilvesniemi defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Helsinki in 1992. Dr. Ilvesniemi has worked as the Director at the Department of Forest Ecology and the Lecturer and Associate Professor at the Department of Forest Soil Science at the University of Helsinki.

 

Jarkko Hantula, D.Ph., was appointed as the Professor of Pathology at the Vantaa Research Centre, effective March 1, 2004.

The research field of forest pathology covers studies on forest diseases and damages and prevention of them. In addition, the research includes practical use of forest mushrooms and examination of pesticides used in forestry. Jarkko Hantula defended his doctoral thesis at the University of Helsinki in 1991. He has worked at the Finnish Forest Research Institute since 1994, first as a Senior Researcher and since 2002 as the Acting Professor of Forest Pathology.

 

Leena Finér, D.Sc. (Agr. & For.), was appointed as the Professor of Silviculture at the Joensuu Research Centre, effective August 15, 2004.

The research field of silviculture includes the basics and methods of forest regeneration, as well as forest ecology and physiology of forest trees.

 

Leena Finér defended her doctoral thesis within the field of agriculture and forestry at the University of Helsinki in 1992. Finér worked as a researcher and senior researcher at the Finnish Forest Research Institute between 1983 – 2001. Since 2001 she has held the Professorship of Forest Management at the University of Joensuu.

 

Jukka Laine, D.Sc. (Agr. & For.), was appointed as the Professor of Peatland Forestry at the Parkano Research Station, effective August 1, 2004.

The research field of peatland forestry is divided into two entities; the first one consists of ecology of peatland forests, fluxes and pools of water and soil nutrients, and development of peatland forests; the second one covers fluxes and pools of water and soil nutrients in drained peatland forests, and regeneration and handling of peatland forests.

 

Jukka Laine defended his doctoral thesis within the field of agriculture and forestry at the University of Helsinki in 1984. He has worked as a researcher and a teacher at the University of Helsinki and as a researcher at the Academy of Finland.

 

Jussi Uusivuori, Ph.D., was appointed as the Professor of National Economics of Forestry at the Vantaa Research Centre, effective Sep. 1, 2004.

The research field of National Economics of Forestry covers timber market operations, investments in forestry, economic behaviour of forest owners, and forest policy instruments and their effectiveness. In addition to timber production, the research field covers also other forms of forest use.

 

Jussi Uusivuori defended his doctoral thesis in 1990 at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Dr. Uusivuori has worked as a Forest Economist at Pellervo Economic Research Institute PTT and as a researcher at the University of Helsinki, at Metla and at the Academy of Finland.

 

Jori Uusitalo, D.Sc. (Agr. & For.), was appointed as the Director of the Parkano Research Station, effective Oct. 1, 2004.

The Parkano Research Station, established in 1961, is the first regional research station of Metla. Its major research fields are peatland forestry, forest health conditions and forest regeneration and silviculture.

 

Jori Uusitalo studied forest technology at the University of Helsinki where he defended his doctoral thesis in 1996. Uusitalo has held fixed-term professorships at the University of Joensuu, both in wood and forest technology. He has studied, for example, timber harvesting and wood quality.

 

Ari Turunen, Lic.Soc.Sc., was appointed as the Head of Communications at Metla, effective Dec. 7, 2004.

In cooperation with Metla’s management, the Head of Communications attends to the design, implementation, development and coordination of internal and external communications at Metla. The Head of Communications is also the superior for the Communications staff of Metla.

 

Ari Turunen has worked at CSC, the Finnish IT center for science as the PR Manager and Science Editor. Ari Turunen has also become acquainted with the world of media when he worked as an editor at YLE – Finnish Broadcasting Company and a columnist with the Metro journal. Turunen has degrees in communications theory and digital media as well as in communications management.
